The topic is the passage of time.
My inspirations are: 1) Salvador Dalí's "The Persistence of Memory." The values are so varied, bringing out every individual groove in the peach object in the middle. It also gives the melting clocks a lot more dimension, as if they're actually rippling. The piece also uses a lot of perspective. I will also try to incorporate the detail in the values. 2) Andrew Moore's "Detroit Assembled." Line weight and texture are distinctly varied to create the fibrous texture of the parchment vs. the metallic sheen of the clock vs. the gauzy fabric of the metaphysical 'time' inside the clock. I will also try to incorporate something that is dripping, like the inside of the clock. 3) Jill Pelto's "Climate Change Data." Pelto also varies value and line weight to create the glaciers and sea, and the white swirls on the water/the data graph in the background also make it seem two-dimensional. I will also try to be this detailed with the individual crags of the glaciers. I sketched 3 different scenes and I am going to do the uppermost one. 1) What was your "Passage of Time" theme for your painting. Why did you choose it? My theme was childhood, and I chose it because it was interesting. 2) What types of value did you use in the creation of your work? I used a variety of values and tones. I also used different textures for gen sunset and the people. 3) How was the process of drawing for you? Was it difficult, easy..and why? It was hard for me and also a new experience, because I had to tape down the watercolor paper in order to do a wash. The tape curled up and didn't adhere perfectly. However, the charcoal clock hand was easier. 4) How does your drawing represent your theme? What specific imagery did you use to complete this? I used a Roman numeral clock and a portion of a Ferris wheel on a sunset. This is meant to juxtapose the archaic nature of time with the transiency of an amusement park ride. 5) What was the hardest part of the assignment? The watercolor background, because I kept messing up, and the fade from purple to red doesn't look even. |
