1) What was your "Inside/Outside" theme for your painting. Why did you choose it?
My theme was the inside and outside of the ocean. I chose it because I wanted to challenge myself by drawing the underside of ocean ripples and their interaction with the light piercing through the surface. 2) What types of colors did you use in the creation of your work? I used a variety of blues that I mixed with black and white to make the ocean. The fish/school of fish and the corals are composed of shades of pink and green. I also mixed white with water to get the translucent rays of sunshine. 3) How was the process of painting for you? Was it difficult, easy..and why? It wasn't easy, but it wasn't too difficult either. There was definitely a learning curve though especially with drawing the small bits of dark water that were directly underneath the bright part, and painting the highlights to make them pop. Painting the fish and the coral however was relatively easy and enjoyable. The most satisfying part was extending the sun rays at the end over the rest of the painting. 4) How does your painting represent your theme? What specific imagery did you use to complete this? It represents the inside and the outside of different parts of the world and how the sea can seem a lot more mystical when seen from its inner workings. Somewhat of a commentary on how perspectives can affect the extent of a setting's glorifications. For imagery, I left out details of the fish, because they could be fish that look intimidating or predatory from a frontal view, and made the waves fade out with broad and over-simplified brush strokes. It's kind of like seeing the world from a simplistic and nascent lens. 5) What was the hardest part of the assignment? Drawing the water was hard because usually water isn't drawn in discombobulated blue lumps, so I was hesitant to see the result because I thought it might look weird, and the color mixing to match the blue gradient was very difficult though I got help from Reilly.
